Tips On How To Replace Old Pool Lights With The 2022 New Pool Light

In replacing the old pool lights for your in-ground swimming pool with the 2022 new pool lights, there is no need of draining the water from the pool or hiring a professional.

With the design of the pool light's housing you can easily remove it from the pool without having to disconnect any wiring.

By following a few safety steps, you can safely replace the pool light without fear of electrocution although, you might get wet when replacing a burned out in-ground swimming pool light.

Materials needed for the work include noncontact voltage tester, screwdriver, replacement screws and gasket if necessary, and soft terrycloth towel.

Here are some safety tips that will guide you when replacing the pool light.

Disconnect Electricity to Pool

Turn the circuit breaker to the swimming pool light off. It is advisable to use a circuit tester to make sure electricity is not going to the pool.

The tester alerts you if electricity is present by flashing and beeping. Double check if there is still electricity by turning the switch to the “On” position and then returns the switch to the "Off" position.

Remove Screw Holding Light Housing

Enter the pool to access the screw along the bottom of the pool light housing bezel. Remove the screw from the housing.

Remove the Light Housing

Attached to the housing is a long, waterproof cord, so you can replace the light from outside the water by pulling the pool light housing from the side of the pool. Place the light housing on a towel outside the pool.

Loosen Other Screws

Look for a single brass screw or a numerous brass screws behind the bezel holding the bezel, light housing gasket and lens to the housing. Gently loose the screws to release the bezel, gasket and lens from the housing.

Replace All Corroded Screws

Discard any wear away screws and replace them with new ones gotten from your pool supply center. Examine the gasket carefully for wear, cracks or crimps and replace it if need be.

Remove Original Bulb

Remove any moisture in the inner part of the housing by drying with a soft terrycloth towel. Hold the original bulb with the towel and untwist it from the housing socket.

Ensure that the 2022 new pool light bulb match the size, shape and wattage of your original bulb as all pool light bulbs are not compatible.

Install the Replacement Bulb

Screw the new pool light bulb in the light housing and then install the new light housing gasket around the edge of the light lens if applicable. Place the lens on the end of the housing and install the bezel over the lens.

Replace Pool Light Housing

Fit and tight the screw or screws holding the bezel to the pool light bulb housing. Wind the housing cord around the housing and insert the housing into the pool light opening in the pool wall.

Seal the new pool light appropriately against water seepage to prevent any air bubbles from escaping from the housing after submerging it inside the water.

Secure Light Housing Screw

Secure the light to the pool wall with the screw you removed earlier. Then turn on the pool lighting circuit breaker.
